Electricity - What's the Story?
During 2013 Bogong Centre for Sound Culture approached KVHS to collaborate with them to be the first stop for their interactive sound exhibition, Bogong Electrics which they were exhibiting over a weekend at Bogong Village.
It all revolved around the Kiewa Hydro Scheme, which was built by the State Electric Commission of Victoria. Three hydro power stations were built from the late 1930's till 1960 and is the biggest hydro scheme in Victoria. The townships of Bogong Village and Mount Beauty were established to house the workers, staff and their families of the scheme. The managers of Bogong Centre for Sound Culture put their idea to us for all of our displays in our museum have this one topic, - the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. This task would involve all of our exhibitions cabinets, and the wall spaces’ showing the hydro theme. It was a huge job replacing all our current exhibitions and displaying new exhibits. This exhibition was complemented by an enormous electronic light in the museum space, which was supplied by the Bogong Centre managers. These photos are from Electricity What’s the Story, which was on display for about six months. They include artefacts from KVHS collection which are original equipment, insulators, core samples, used during the construction of the scheme. Original photos were also on display along a gallery of photos of machinery taken by a local woman as part of her fine arts university degree.
The Kiewa Hydro Scheme is one of the permanent exhibition themes at our KVHS Museum. However, we will have new aspects added to it from time to time so there is always something new for visitors to come back to see.
